Packaging trends move fast, but the brands that are winning right now aren’t chasing gimmicks. They’re doubling down on a few practical ideas that make a box feel more premium without inflating the print bill. Here are five we’re seeing show up again and again in the projects we print.
1. Fewer Colors, More Confidence
Full-bleed, four-color designs still have their place, but a lot of the strongest packaging we see now leans on one or two brand colors printed boldly on kraft or white stock. It reads as intentional and premium, and it’s usually cheaper to print than a busy, full-color wrap.
2. Packaging That Skips the Landfill Guilt
Recyclable mailer boxes, kraft materials, and soy-based inks aren’t a niche request anymore, they’re close to the default expectation for a lot of shoppers. Customers increasingly check the box (literally) before they check out, and packaging that’s honestly recyclable is becoming a quiet competitive advantage.
3. One Material, Not Five
Mono-material packaging, where the box, the inserts, and the tape are all the same recyclable material, is gaining ground because it’s actually easy to recycle in practice, not just in theory. It also tends to simplify your packaging costs since you’re not sourcing multiple materials.
4. The Inside of the Box Is Doing More Work
Printed tissue paper, a branded thank-you card, or a printed interior lid are small additions that turn opening a box into a moment worth photographing. This is one of the most cost-effective upgrades a small brand can make, since it doesn’t require redesigning the whole box.
5. Typography as the Main Design Element
Instead of relying on illustrations or photography, a lot of newer packaging designs use bold, well-set type as the entire visual identity. It’s a design approach that photographs cleanly for social media and tends to age well instead of looking dated after a year.
Bringing These Ideas to Your Packaging
None of these trends require a big minimum order or a six-figure design budget. Most of them are decisions you make with your designer before the first box ever gets printed.
